First day in Amman

Yesterday I flew into Amman, and my only responsibility was to eat, and then sleep.  Today was a different story.

Today, we had on our schedule travel to our local CIEE center, and this was followed by a visit to a study center.    This seemed pretty much what I expected, and was then also followed by a visit to the Royal Automobile Museaum.  This visit seemed especially random, but was interesting enough, I suppose.  The royal family certainly does enjoy a fast car.

Then we went to my favorite parts of today; the Roman Theater and the Roman Citidel.

These structures were originally Greek.  Then the Romans had their turn, and Amman became the first Philadelphia.  It was later changed to Amman when the Muslims came to town.

The Greeks built a moderate sized theater, without a stage.  The Romans, known for their excesses, felt like they needed two additional rows of seating, as well as an actual stage to do their thing.

The rock that the steps were carved out of were worn slick, and getting to the top was nothing short of painful.  Getting down was just as bad, and I found that when I went down the short steps to the museum, my quads froze.  That was painful.

The next stop was the Temple of Hercules.  There's not much left of it, but it was so cool.  There were only a couple remaining pieces left of the original statue, which based on the size of the three fingers and the elbow, the statue was probably the size of a school bus sat on its end.

The mosque was really pretty big, but kind of falling apart.  They were in the process of fixing it back up.  The carvings were clearly ancient and some of them had been redone.  The time spent carving was amazing.  So beautiful.

From here, you can see buildings going in every direction.  I had no idea Amman was quite this big.  It really is a beautiful city.
